Getting An Insight Into Our Chakra System

September 7th, 2010 Anne-Marie Laureaut No comments

Chakrology is a term introduced by practitioners of alternative medicine and New Age philosophers to describe the study of the chakra system, the human bodys energy processing centers identified almost four thousand years ago by the Ancient Hindus.

According to the Ancient Hindus, there are thousands of chakra points that make up the human bodys chakra system but of these, there are seven chakra points that are considered of major importance. This major chakra system which consists of the seven major points is our bodys main energy processing centers. As it is, they are our active connection to our consciousness and spiritual essence.

The active functions of the major chakras contribute individually to the totality of the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of our life. Each one of our seven energy centers with their own specific character is compatible to a unique feature of our being. They work in a continuous relationship with one another towards achieving balance in the human body and are not vying for ascendancy over another of the other chakra points.

Although there are various models of the human bodys chakra system they have one thing in common, all models depict an uncanny illustration of the human bodys endocrine system and how the various endocrine glands chemically signal and communicate to one another.

New Age philosophers go further in giving a graphic representation of the bodys major chakras by assigning one of the primary colors Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet for each of the seven major energy centers in our body. Coincidental or not, colors are also used to depict different levels of energy that emanate from the environment, including the people and objects therein.

Although the energy points of our chakra system can not be seen, they are considered as extensions or invisible gateways to the endocrine glands that they correspond to. A chakric malfunction whether benign or not, directly affects our endocrinal system and therefore our body. Since they are the gateways of energy to and from our body, any blockages can result in our illness as well and an imbalance of our health.

The positioning and role of the chakras in our totality (physical, mental and emotional) as human beings give them significant importance in two aspects of our lives: health and illness.

Due to the holistic nature of energy fields, both within and outside our body, any interruption in the regular function of any of the seven major energy centers results in a corresponding malfunction in our physical being, which sometimes go unnoticed for long periods of time. It is therefore important that the complete body, both physical and metaphysical, is properly taken cared of and nurtured in order to achieve balance and harmony.

Five of the seven major chakras in our body are assumed to have both a dominant and less dominant. Generally, the dominant side is considered to be the one facing the front while the less dominant side is the one facing backwards. The two major chakras that do not have this characteristic are the first chakra (at the base of the spinal column) and the seventh chakra (the crown of the head.

This even makes it more important to realize the functions of our chakra system and how to manipulate them to our advantage in order for them to send and receive energy in equal amounts.

Downward Dog and Other Embarrassments

February 18th, 2010 Nelson Pellew No comments

Having never been one to exert myself as a young man, it seems absurd that now, approaching 40, that I cannot abide a day without some form of rigorous exercise. Yes, I was a portly lad who was fond of Toblerones and Lion Bars. To be sure, I would go as far out of my way as possible to avoid the football field or the gymnasium. But, of course, middle age has a way of making it worth your while to stay alive. Hence, I now endeavor to stay active.

My ideal weight, at least according to the pundits and insipid online health forums, falls somewhere between 195 and 220 pounds. The higher range of that spectrum is approximately 40 grueling pounds away. Accordingly, I have embarked on a program that includes weight training, moderate aerobics (read as a walking), yoga, and a new selection of exercise clothing.

To be sure, for someone of my size to take a shining to yoga may seem rather comical. I assure you, it is no less humorous that watching me struggle with a 60-pound bench press sans a spotter. Enjoy your self-satisfied chuckle, but let he who is without weight cast the first stone. Yoga, I find, allows me to opportunity to break a sweat, broaden my range of motion, and find a morsel of tranquility.

As a young man of 240 pounds, I had thought I would find some sort of inspiration along the lines of Yukio Mishima and his late-life blossoming into apparent health. Unfortunately, that blossoming never came. No, my course was set by a stolen, sidelong glance at myself in the mirror. Yes, al naturale, as I was exiting the shower. No, it was not a pretty sight, but I have seldom been one to think I graced this world with much beauty. Rather, it was how terribly pathetic and undignified I looked.

To say I don\’t cut dashing figure is an understatement of sorts. Indeed, I am closer to Christopher Hitchens than Gary Cooper. To which I must say, I certainly will not be putting on the proverbial Ritz. Even now, with more than a few months behind me and my behind firmly tucked into a downward dog position, I must confess I look positively worse for the wear. Nevertheless, I enjoy each blessed day — and every cursed moment at the galley\’s oar, sweating like Charlton Heston.

Some of the best exercise clothing for women — of which I claim to be no expert — can be located and purchased online, including yoga paraphernalia.
