Learn About The Risks Of Failing To Winterize Your Home Plumbing

August 10th, 2010 Adrianna Noton No comments

Spending a small amount of your quality time in the late summer or early fall winterizing, may be one of the most important things that you can do. It can keep you from spending your winter cringing at the thought of a disaster, each time it snows or rains and the temperature drops below freezing. Read on and learn about the risks of failing to winterize your home plumbing.

Major Oakville plumbing problems can be caused by freezing temperatures when pipes burst in the home, simply because a few simple precaution were not taken to prevent it from happening. Plumbers receive calls every year, and have to make costly repairs to people’s homes that could have been avoided if they had known to take a few preventative steps to protect there pipes from freezing temperatures.

Let us start out with the small stuff first and work our way up. The outdoor faucets are easy, but they are pretty important. The first thing you should do is to remove any hoses, put them away, and be sure that the faucets are completely shut off. Now you are ready to wrap the faucets in order to insulate them. You can use just about anything, a rag, cardboard, a piece of insulation, or you can get online and purchase a type of Styrofoam faucet cover.

Now we need to figure out where the water main is and know how to shut it off when we really need to. Your main water line normally runs underground about a foot to a foot and a half from the water meter by your sidewalk or street at the entrance to your home.

Knowing how to turn off your water meter when you need to can prevent your pipes from bursting in freezing temperatures. If there is no water running in your house, or your main pipes have burst, you will need to close the main shut off valve. Never open the water meter box at the curb! Opening this box could freeze the water that is flowing at the meter point.

Also in your yard, you have a irrigation system, that may have an exposed opening. You may have noticed it as an open hole in your yard. This is made up of a combination of metal, with plastic pipe, so during freezing temperatures, this must be kept covered. You can also drain these irrigation lines and close the water off to them to keep the pipes from breaking.

For inside you home, whenever they predict freezing weather, you can do a simple thing by opening cabinet doors in the kitchen and bath. This will allow more heat to get to the pipes. You will need to insulate any and all exposed pipe with an approved insulation product, like tape, etc.

Should you have the unthinkable happen, use an electric hairdryer or lamp to thaw out the pipes. Never use any kind of open flame or torch! Never use and insulation blanket on a gas water heater, they are to be used on electric water heaters only! They will cause a gas heater to burn out its heating element. This is serious!

Are you feeling confident that you can prepare your plumbing for freezing temperatures? It will just take a little time. Call a Guelph plumber should you have any major problems during the winter, but if you follow these steps, most problems can be avoided. Some of the products talked about can be found online if you need to purchase them. You are ready for winter because you took the time to learn about the risks of failing to winterize your home plumbing.

Wheather you live in Burlington, Oakville, or Guelph a good plumber is a person to know. Home plumbing can be quite costly to fix so don’t delay if you suspect you have a problem. Find a plumber in Burlington or your local area to inspect the problem.

Shower Water Filters. Why Would You Ever Need One?

November 17th, 2009 Peter Abertoning No comments

Shower water filters. Clearly we need to filter our drinking water, but why in the world would you bother to filter your shower water?

After all who drinks shower water? You just wash in it.

But even so there are excellent reasons to use a shower water filter. Here’s 4 good reasons in support of using a shower water filter every time you shower.

1. Chlorine. Now we all know that you shouldn’t drink chlorine, and that the best water filters filter out chlorine. There’s no doubt that drinking chlorine isn’t good for you and some consider it very likely that drinking chlorine causes cancer.

But even showering in chlorinated water is a problem. Several actually. Because when you shower some of the water goes into your skin. And in a hot shower your pores actually open wider and let more in, and if there’s chlorine in the water the chlorine goes in too. So in effect you’ve just drunk chlorinated water.

2. As you shower the hot water releases chlorine gas into the air in the shower, and it stays in the shower as it cant get out, so you’re breathing it.

There was a recent report in the American Journal of Public Health. It linked chlorine with cancer. And where do you think it concluded that we got 2/3rds of our chlorine? From skin absorption and breathing chlorine in the shower.

And the chlorine must eventually waft out of the shower, and when it does it contaminates the atmosphere in your home.

And there’s more nasty effects to chlorine in your shower water. It dries out and damages your hair. Just think back to what your hair felt like after a swim in a pool. That’s chlorine. And chlorine can dry out the natural oils in your skin and make your skin itchy. Shower filtration is especially useful to anyone with excema.

3. All the above applies to many of the other chemicals and toxins that are found in our water. Nasties like pesticides and herbicides, lead, antibiotics, heavy metals and much much more.

Some of these toxins will be like chlorine, will form a gas in hotter water. And so even if you’ve filtered nasty toxins out of your drinking water you’re still drinking them in the shower, by breathing them in.

4. A high quality shower water filter will both soften your hair and also make your skin softer and healthier. Hair color doesn’t fade like it used to and your hair just looks and feels better.

The best shower water filters filter out just about any nasties you can imagine, including 99.99% of chlorine. (All of it basically).

And at a surprisingly low cost per annum compared to what you might be paying for health care. Filtering your shower water costs only a couple of dollars a week. There are some more expensive, but if you compare shower water filters you’ll find that you can buy the worlds best shower water filter for under $70.

So there you have it. 4 good reasons to buy a shower water filter. You’re actually better to buy a whole house water filter so you’ve got clean water to drink, bathe in and wash clothes in, but if you’re just thinking of a shower water filter make sure you filter your water too.
